GPAP ATTENDS BOY SCOUT CAMPEREE
On October
18, 2008 our club was invited to take part in the Boy Scouts Camperee held at
the rodeo grounds in Wickenburg, AZ. Through the combined efforts of Chris
Tinney and Paul Davis who coordinated with the Boy Scout leaders we were able to
work with the scouts and put on demonstrations of gold panning, a spiral wheel,
Blue Bowl and dry washer.
We had five members who attended and worked the
panning and various pieces of equipment and answered numerous questions about
gold and how we find and recover it.
The members worked hard all day
because we had 1300 to 1500 Scouts, staff, parents and others. It felt
like every one of them came by; twice! The Scouts and other attendees
seemed to have a great time and they were genuinely interested in our
demos. It should be noted at this time that the experience for our members
was extremely rewarding. We all had a great time watching the enthusiasm
of the kids.
The scouting staff set us up like royalty, on a
concrete pad with tables and shade canopy, and lots of water. They also
considered us as staff and fed us. We have been invited to attend the
spring camperee to be held at the pioneer village.
The members who worked
the caperee were Paul Davis, John Koho, Terrance Little, Mike Laybe and Les
Line. We hope that if and when we do this again we will get more
volunteers. It is an experience you will never
forget.
